Why were you using a torque wrench to take nuts off?

Because it was rented

Could you not have rented a real breaker bar?

I went to Autozone last night and the clerk told me it was fine to use as a breaker. It was not. I took it back today and told them what happened and they said “oh yeah these break all the time. We just warranty them.”
I got another torque wrench and rented a real breaker while I was there.

Massive idiots. If it was there tools you’d be sure they wouldn’t say use it as a torque wrench.

Idiots. A torque wrench is a tuned instrument and isn’t designed to be pushed past the set torque. When you push the mechanism like that you are going to break it every time.

As I've now learned. They weren't too worked up by it. They said they have four or five of these break a month, probably from other people like me using them wrong or not setting them to 0 when done.

I picked up a craftsman 1/2" drive basic breaker bar a few years ago after finally getting frustrated - one of my best purchases...

The one I got from Autozone (OEM brand) was $25 to rent. I may eventually buy my own for convenience’s sake, but it’s no trouble to go over there when I need one for now.
